Need help understanding what happened to my ankle.

As usual, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, I think your insight is one of the most valuables assets of this forum. On the other hand I hope no one is getting any conclusions from the information I provide as I realize I am not being precise at all (so everyone, please take care to discriminate between the valid opinion here, i.e. JamesJohnsonLMT and my own babbling about my injured ankle).

Things keep improving slowly, I still have some minor swelling. This swelling is placed "over" the lateral malleolus and reaches a little bit towards the front of the leg.  When I say "over" I mean that it is not the bone that is swollen, but some ligament lying there. I do not really understand what is causing this but it does not seem to produce any pain at all (and is probably related to the damage to the peroneal tendons, see details in a while). I realize my mention of the syndesmosis last time might have been a little more alarming than necessary, the swelling is located in its general vicinity but I am not sure it is really affected. Apologies for my absolute lack of precision as my grasp on anatomy is veeeery shaky.

The pain is almost gone and I have been able ot walk without any pain for a few days now (actually minor discomfort while walking only lingered for the first couple of days). After 5 days with a pretty strong bandage to limit the movement (all of this was last week), I have been free of bandages for some days now and everything looks good. I can walk, bike and even swim without ever remembering I was ever injured, but if I turn around suddenly with my right heel on the ground I get a "friendly remainder" that something is not yet right. In these cases the pain is quite clearly produced by the peroneal tendons (muscles?, sorry again) in the zone where they reach the lateral malleolus (so close to the swelling but not exactly in the same place.

I went to the PT again and got my ankle generally probed, twisted and treated. The guy gave me a good beating (localised in the peroneal tendons, so in a narrow area almost from the knee to the ankle) but I really felt better the day after (I have come to dread the actual while at the PT but treasure the final results. I was quite hopeful as he described the steps of teh recuperation (propioception exercises, run-walk, run on flat ground and mountain running). I was half expecting him to tell me I could start running soon but when I asked "do you think I will be able to run this week?" he looked at me in a funny way and firmly forbid it. In the end he said something like "come back next week and we'll see" (but it looks like my run-walking stage might not arrive as soon as i would like).

All in all, I am quite happy to be able to move about without (I very much hope) not hurting myself. The biking thing is helping a lot with stress management and the injury does not really look too bad. On the other hand, being unable to run always sucks, but, as JamesJohnson mentions, I have come to realize that having a body that allows you to enjoy long distance running is a gift to be treasured, so it is patience for me and as much rest as I amb able to give myself.
